Art of Travel: Exploring Asia With Photographer Ian Robert Knight

“Exploring distant lands, meeting people, and learning about their culture and traditions is what I consider to be one of the most important things a person can do,” Ian Robert Knight (ianrobertknight.com) says with a sparkle in his eyes. During four decades as a photographer, he has traveled to six continents and visited close to 100 countries.

Originally from Canada, which he still considers home, his current base in Bangkok, Thailand allows him to travel around Asia with relative ease. Everywhere that he visits in this area provides tremendous experiences. If you’re interested in traveling with Knight, his company Private Photo Tours will take you through some of the most incredible places in China, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bhutan, Laos, Canada, South America, Europe, and more, where you’ll experience culture, cuisine, and unique local attractions, all while perfecting your photography skills and making new friends.

The incredible selection of images from Knight’s travels in Asia that are featured here are filled with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the people he has met and the destinations he has experienced.

BHUTAN

The Gangtey Monastery, built in 1613, is one of the most important Buddhist schools in Bhutan. This huge temple sits on a hill overlooking the beautiful Phobjikha Valley in central Bhutan.

In the Upper Paro Valley of Bhutan, a group of novice monks huddle together to secretly watch a video on a mobile phone tucked into the sleeves of one of the crimson robes. Even monks can’t resist viral videos.

Carved phalluses are common sights in Bhutan. They are believed to ward off evil spirits and gossip. Just like in real life, they come in many shapes, sizes and colors.

CHINA

Cormorant fishermen have plied the waters of the Li River in Guangxi province for centuries. Now the enterprising seniors are more likely to earn a living from being photographed.

Casting a net from a bamboo raft, a Cormorant fisherman on the Li River near Xingping performs a task that has become less common every day, now that commercial fisheries have taken over.

If you get up early enough, you’ll easily spot groups of people quietly practicing Tai Chi, like this collection spotted along the Huangpu River in Shanghai.

SRI LANKA

Sunsets on the west coast city of Galle Fort are a spectator sport. The wall that surrounds the city is a great spot to watch the people enjoying the daily event.

The colorful white and red candy striped Jami UI-Alfar Mosque situated in Pettah, Colombo is hard to miss. It’s one of the oldest and most architecturally fascinating mosques in Sri Lanka.

If you’re looking to buy a few thousand bananas at wholesale prices, this is your guy. He’s ready for your orders in the Manning Market, Colombo’s huge fresh produce center.

THAILAND

Longtail boats are a common way to travel between islands in Thailand. Pulling them onto the beach on Pod Island, Krabi, Thailand requires some determination and skills, along with a cooperating surf.

The Karen ethnic group is one of the largest hill tribes in Thailand, with almost a million people. Karen women, like this one near Chiang Mai, have used brass neck rings as a symbol of beauty for centuries.

The Yi Ping Festival is one of Thailand’s most spectacular events, held on the night of the full moon on the 12th lunar month every year. Thousands of lanterns are released in unison, in a visually stunning scene.

VIETNAM

Northern Vietnam has some of the most beautiful scenery in Asia, and a cruise in HaLong Bay is one of the best ways to experience it. Sailing through the thousands of limestone mountains is something everyone should do in their lifetime.

Group exercise and dance clubs are popular throughout Vietnam. These senior cheerleaders were practicing their dance routines early in the morning, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake in Hanoi.

A troupe of Lion Dancers in Hanoi took a rest from their practice, and were happy to be photographed. Lion dances are often performed at festivals and other auspicious events throughout Asia, including Vietnam.
